User Reviews
The 40D a GREAT camera
reviewer: air52air
rating: 5
pros: Quality shots, features, and engineering
cons: None that I am aware of

Going from the rebel XT to the 40D is a Dream !

The controls are perfectly placed .
After set-up you don't have to look away from the viewfinder, everything is easily accessible .

The focusing is easier , the images are sharper,
the camera is easier to use, the battery lasts longer,
and it is an overall sweet camera for less than $1500.

This camera has pro features without the pro cost.

I stand 100% behind this wonderful camera and would
suggest that this is the new camera you have been shopping around for .
a monster w/o monster price

pros: high-speed shutter, sensor cleaning, compatibility w/EOS accessories
cons: price but wot the heck

I was a former Nikon-man till my brother told me about the Canon-series cameras. I tried once back in the early 90s and haven't looked back. This is my fifth digital camera, my first being the DCS520 (still available for purchase). What can I say about this that you haven't heard from others? I like the feel of it, very comfortable and easy to use. The controls are a bit strangely placed, but it just takes a little getting used to, as in any new equipment. I adore the heavy weight, as - IMHO - it adds to the stability of the control and balance of a good camera; you just cannot handhold a tiny/thin P&S too well. I especially LOVE the high-speed shutter and it's also sooo quiet! I wish I had this camera months ago while shooting a ballet performance!! This is a quality camera that was well thought-out and am pleased with the results!
No Need To Upgrade To 50D

pros: Excellent low ISO quality. Machine gun rapid fire shooting. Fast auto focus and auto tracking. Ergonomically comfortable in my hands. Sturdy and weatherproof. Free sensor cleaning FOR LIFE from the Irvine, CA Canon facility.
cons: Combined with the 28-135 lens and Speedlite 430 ED II, it can be quite heavy.

Before I bought the 40D, I researched the hell out of it. After reading all the reviews and comments, I bought it and wasn't disappointed...until three months later when Canon announced the 50D.
Naturally I was pissed that the latest and greatest semi-pro camera became obsolete so quickly. But as time went on, it turns out the 50D ranks lower in image quality than the 40D. Seems Canon is caught up in the megapixel race and needed something to compete with Nikon's 300D. So they basically took the 40D and jammed 5 extra megapixels on the sensor.
But in typical business operating fashion, the "marketing" department called the shots on this one, not the "engineers" who build the damn thing. As a result, those extra megapixels create poor image quality with the 50D.
So for less money, you can get superior image quality, especially with high ISO images, with the 40D. That's also probably why the 40D is still on the market. Why get rid of a good thing?

pros: Greta Value for Money - A Real Semi-Pro
cons: Lower buttons on rear may be activated when carried round neck.

OK dealing with the negatives first - There are so few, but if the camera is on and I'm carrying it on th eneck strap there is a tendency to operate the buttoms on the rear bottom. Not a major issue, but sometimes annoying.
Having got that out of the way - this is an awesome camera in its price range. As with most cameras, you really do need to invest in a good lens but with my limited budget, I have still been getting way above average photos compared with previous cameras. Like computers, you need to future proof yourself as far as you can afford and this is a great choice if this is your budget.
Great camera

pros: Well build, great pictures, great price
cons: None that I know of.

I upgraded from the Canon Digital Rebel XT. The 40d is just a great camera it has a good solid feel, the controls are easy to figure out and well placed, the shutter speed is fantasic fast at 6.5 fps, battery life is darn good at about 1000 shots or so.
I just cant say enough about this camera!
I will and have recommended this camera to anyone that wants a good professional level camera.
Canon's Done It Again

pros: Live View Setting, No Shutter Shake, lightweight, auto sensor cleaning, sturdy body
cons: None yet

I'm getting to know my new camera and have fallen in love with it. I'm a veteran Canon digital user, and have the Rebel XTI, 30D, and guess what? I want the 5D next. I can only imagine what it would be like, because this one is PHENOMENOL and it's hard to get me to say that.

I love the fact that there's virtally no camera shake! In low light, sometimes things are a bit blurry, but that's not from shaking. I've gotten so many shots with this camera that I wouldn't have gotten at all, let alone as good, with another.

Two thumbs up, Canon. You have outdone yourself this time.

pros: Easy to use,Nice menus,Wide selection of add ons, size is great
cons: Not that I know,it just took me awhile to learn certain usefull features

This is one heck of a camera I was impressed right out of the box , the vertical grip is a nust have, low light performance is great, the Auto Exposure Bracketing is easy and a life saver, I take mine everywhere, makes picture hunting a dream. If you buy anything this year grab this honey of a camera!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simply a Dream.

pros: Image quality/speed...obviously. Study feel. Important one for me coming from the Rebel.
cons: If you don't know how to use a DSLR, don't get this camera.

I recently upgraded from the Canon EOS Rebel XT and by god is there a huge difference...literally.

The Rebel feels so small and puny in my hands now, which by many factors is not a good thing considering the 40D is not much heavier.

I have only taken a few pictures so far, but already I feel like this camera will accelerate my already growing photography skills!

I bought it used for $825...so I can't comment on the price...It was too good of deal for me to pass up and wait for the 50D...5 MP, same body design...better screen...ehhh not worth 500-600 more.

If you can find a good deal on this camera go for it! You will not be disappointing!

pros: Picture Quality, Price, Buttons placed just right
cons: A little heavy

This is my first EOS camera. I've always used point and shoot canons, and have graduated to my first EOS. I love it! Love it! At first was leary about purchasing it, but boy am I glad I did.
Best Value if you dont have $1500+ to spend for a DSLR

pros: Quality, build, affordable price compared to 50D, live view, image quality, and much much more!
cons: 50D has come out, no Video recording, only 10MB while other new ones are at 12+MB, heavy with accessories (good and bad), lens creep on the 28-135 lens, not bundled with a L lens, no HDMI, wish it had SD and CF slots combined, noise at extreme ISO, ISO only to 6400 while new ones at higher levels, live view and raw not on auto modes

I just bought my 40D earlier this year. Im still a newbie with all the features. But for the price at the time... i got the bundle for $1099 at Best Buy. I was looking at the 50D at the same time, but the 50D was more expensive ($1600 at the time) and while the 50D had new features, most people and reviews recommend the 40D over the 50D in both price and image quality.

While the 50D has an 5+ MB edge over the 40D, I found the image quality similar on both cameras. Both Cameras can use any of Canon's full line of DSLR lenses. Build for both was the same. The heavy factor (good and bad) was similar on both.
So for me price won out. With the extra cash I save on the 40D, I can use it to buy a L lens or a nice Tamron or Sigma lens.

The camera in my opinion is user friendly but you need some time to learn all the features to master the Camera. I recommend this for people upgrading from a Rebel to a semi-pro camera. Also get some books on this camera to help u understand what is not on the manual.

CONs: no Video (but i can live with out it), No high ISO like the 50d (but i can live with out it), and i wish it had a combo CF and SD slots (maybe the 60D will have it) also its heavy (so you need a tri-pod or mono-pod when shooting) no raw or live view in the auto modes

Pros: Affordable, Image Quality, Live View, can use any Canon DSLR lens, heavy feel, great build, better quality than your avg rebel, 6.5 frames (faster than the 50D), CMOS and Digic III, all the buttons are placed well, anti-dust and self cleaning, oh yeah and did i mention PRICE!!!!!

other cameras to think of:
50D, Nikon D90, Sony A700, I would mention Nikon D700 or the Canon 5D but those are more PRO cameras

Conclusion: Great camera for the affordable price for someone upgrading to a semi-pro camera, better build quality and Image quality is great.
My good and professional camera!

pros: Great camera! Lots of new functions including automatic sensor cleaning and live view function. Also you can mount both EF and EF-S lenses on it!
cons: Still it doesn't satisfy me at nights and for indoor shots! It get's grainy with ISO 800 and 1600. Oh and the default lens mounted on it really sucks!

My good and professional camera! I have a Canon 28-105mm L Zoom Lens mounted on it together with a UV filter.
Canon EOS 40D

pros: Fast, reliable, great quality, Crisp pics
cons: none

Starting as a novice and using the 40D for professional sports photography was easy to do. The Canon EOS 40D is a breeze to use and learn. Using the sports setting the Canon EOS 40D catches all the action at a fast shutter speed and the pictures are crisp and the colors pop. This Camera makes you want to spend your days out in the field just taking pics. 5 stars! Elias Garcia
Moved from XT to 40D

pros: Just darn fun to play with!
cons: autofocus at night

I've done some just amazing shots with my 40D and I must say, it's just absolutely fun to play with. There are so many cool features to play with from the Live View to the picture styles. Picked up a few new styles from Canon's website and they have made some really spectacular shots siginifcantly cutting down on post production.

The 3-shot AEB is great for producing HDR's and combined with the 6.5fps, you can actually do hand held HDR's if you're still enough.

Combine this puppy with a 2.8f L series lens and you'll be smiling.

As for compairing this to the XT, the speed will be the first thing you notice, the lag between shots is siginificantly reduced and the shutter operates a lot quicker and smoother. Next you'll notice that your photos will also be a little clearer too, color seems duller, but more consistant and cleaner. But you can use the picture styles to modify that if you want more contrast.

The only two down sides I've seen is that in low light the autofocus will just keep adjusting and the shutter will refuse to fire. But if you switch to manual, it'll work fine. Also, some of my pictures appear to have a red cast over them. However, since I'm using my 40D in a desert and the temperatures tend to climb above 104F, that might be my fault.

The 40D has taken my photography to the next level without doubt.
